Wilke Glen Park

Stormwater Management

In 2002, a flood washed out the existing pedestrian bridge and board walk structures in the scenic Wilke Glen Park and Cascade Falls. The damage also compromised the foundation of the existing staircase structure.

The park, located in the St. Croix River National Scenic Riverway, required an environmentally friendly design approach and solution for the overall success of the project. Stevens Engineers worked closely with State and Federal agencies to meet all requirements for complete restoration and improved access to Cascade Falls and park area.

The project included:
  • Steep slope stabilization adjacent to the existing stairway structure using native vegetation rather than hard cover such as rip-rap.
  • Wilke Glen ParkBank stabilization and restoration down stream of the falls consisting of topsoil covered rip rap to blend in with the surroundings.
  • Staircase structure repair and replacement.
  • A 120' long wood walking bridge with viewing platforms beneath the falls and spanning the Osceola Creek designed to withstand future flood flows through the Glen.

Blending the new structures with the surroundings and using soft erosion control solutions in place of traditional hard-scape solutions such as rip-rap enhanced the beauty of the Glen.
